Salzburg is what I consider my hometown. We’re talking school friends, first kisses, summers on bikes, music, and complete teenage freedom.
I grew up here knowing I’d never grow old here. I left as soon as I could, the day after I graduated, without a place to stay or knowing anybody in my new location.
12 years later, I look at this place differently. Distance reintroduced the beauty of this place.
My “Good List” for Salzburg is therefore highly curated and doesn’t include the general sights and tours Salzburg is known for. It includes the places in Salzburg that allow you to feel, breathe, and live out loud.
Food
- 220 Grad – BEST COFFEE IN TOWN. Go to the one in Nonntal for a lovely atmosphere. My go- to is their decaf oat milk cappuccino. They have a special it and it’s scrumdiliumcious. Always packed though, go during off-peak times or take a to-go cup.
- Paradoxon – Lovely breakfast and lunch place in Nonntal, take cash, they don’t take card.
- Zum Fidelen Affen – For some traditional Austrian food, go here and enjoy. I don’t think you’ll get a better option at an affordable price point in Salzburg!
- Balkan Grill – This, you might have heard of and if not, the massive queue will give it away. Tiny, tiny Bosner stand that is absolutely worth the hype. Believe me. Trust me …. just go!
- St. Peter – The one and only go-to spot to visit in Winter but lovely dinner options for the foodies amongst us.
- Humboldt Stubn. Good idea for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks. Organic restaurant and the food it lovely!
- Stiftsbäckerei St. Peter – Salzburgs oldest bakery. Need I say more?!
FUN
- Wechselseitig. Erm….if you’re not going to bookshops while on city visits, are you even having fun?!
- Linzergasse. In my opinion, the best street in town. But I’m biased because I lived in my first apartment there when I was in my “law school phase” (story for another time).
- Kapuziner Berg. Get a hot bev (my favorite is a close spot called Reformstark in Linzergasse) and walk up the 10 mins.
- Rudolsfkai (buy lunch and eat by the water). The perfect spot in the summer, lovely to stroll along the water in the winter.
- Festung Hohensalzburg. Yeah it’s kind of a must, just for the views. If you can, walk up ….exercise will reward the view even more.
- Go see a play. Salzburg is the hub of cultural activities for the classical music scene. Literally, any classical event you’ll see will be amazing. Treat yourself. My go-to is the Landestheater or a rehearsal at the nearby Music University Mozarteum (you’ll be able to find some free gems there).
FITNESS
PILATES: This was kinda the only reason I even wrote this whole post in the first place. I wanted to tell you about Bondi Studios. A Boutique Pilates Studio in Salzburg so divine, I usually get a block card because I know I’ll crave it immediately the next day. Think London, Heartcore or Vienna June and you got yourself a match. Super stylish, Bala weights and Allegro beds (IYKYK).
Enjoy.
